Kevin Max (formerly of DC Talk) welcomes son Knightly!

Kevin Max's wife Amanda has given birth to their third child, Knightly Christobal Max, on March 24 at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Knightly, who joins big sister London and big brother Wilder, measured 20 inches long and weighed 8 lbs. 3 oz.

"We decided to name our third child, Knightly Christobal, after both of our affection for medieval art and history," said Kevin Max. "But all in all, he is looking to be the most modern of all our children, being of raven black hair and sharp blue eyes. I believe being a father is my greatest artistic accomplishment, and Amanda and I look forward to watching him grow and connect to his older brother and sister."

Jars of Clay and Blood: Water Mission

Yesterday at Club Nokia, the guys told us about Blood: Water, and how they've built over 600 wells in Africa, providing over half a million people with clean water.

When Dan Haseltine, Jars of Clay's lead singer, visited Africa in 2002, he had to struggle to accept what he saw. Poverty and physical and social suffering in Africa shook him, challenged him, and changed him. Haseltine returned overwhelmed by despair, transformed by hope and called to action. He came back with a vision for clean blood and clean water in Africa -- blood free of the HIV virus and water free of parasites and bacteria that cause AIDS patients and others undue suffering. He and his band mates envisioned this orphaned continent to be transformed through the installation of Christ's sacrificial symbols of blood and water.

Jars of Clay's main audience are the church and young people across the nation. The band knows that both populations are uniquely equipped to respond to world suffering and injustice. The band members saw a shining opportunity for people to offer Gods hand of mercy in the broken places. They believed that through bringing the crisis to the minds and hearts of Americans and through presenting opportunities to make a positive tangible impact in Africa, lives would be transformed both here and there.

This, then, is the Blood:Water Mission, committed to clean blood and clean water to fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic, to build clean wells in Africa, to support medical facilities caring for the sick, to make a lasting impact in the fight against poverty, injustice and oppression in Africa through the linking of needs, talents and continents, of people and resources. We need you and they need you. Please join us on this journey of hope and care.

Fight hunger with Compassion!

Global Food Initiative

The global food crisis threatens the lives of millions and has been called a "silent tsunami," unleashing turmoil against the most vulnerable children. The Secretary-General of the UN calls it a "moral outrage" and estimates that as much as $40 billion a year is required for the next three to five years.

Compassion International exists as an advocate for children in poverty and works in some of the areas hardest hit by this crisis. We are providing solutions through local churches with nutritional provision and long-term strategies, such as agricultural education, training and tools, so that those consumed by this crisis have the opportunity to grow and prepare their own food.
We ask you to join us by donating so that our program staff will have the resources necessary to fight this global food crisis with success.

Michael Tait joins Newsboys!!!

MICHAEL TAIT TO JOIN NEWSBOYS

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) March 9, 2009— After 22 years and more than 2000 shows, newsboys frontman Peter Furler will no longer front the band in concert. Michael Tait will be touring with the band as lead singer with Peter making special appearances throughout the year.

Peter will continue with the band and his trademark songwriting and production will remain as he focuses his professional career toward future newsboys recordings.

Michael has been on the road with the band over the past weeks working alongside Peter in what has been a positive and enjoyable experience for both parties. It has been a graceful process that both Peter and Michael have worked through as they prepare to make the change in the coming weeks.

Peter states “newsboys to me has always been a mission, and I entrust Mike, Jeff, Jody and Duncan to continue all that is in store for us as a band. I’m looking forward to focusing on the band’s studio career and spending time in my own bed after many years in a tour bus and hundreds of thousands of miles on the road.”

Wes Campbell, newsboys manager explains, “While the decision to replace Peter on the road was a painstaking one, when the idea of dc Talk vocalist Michael Tait was presented it was a no-brainer to all of us. No one can replace Peter, but we know Michael will bring a new attitude, energy and vocal style that will thrill our audience. To be able to continue a world class show and still have Peter behind the scenes guiding the career and making of newsboys music is a huge opportunity for all of us. It’s amazing that after many years of touring with dc Talk in the 1990s that in 2009 our paths would cross once again. It’s an exciting time for all of us.”

“For years, dc Talk and newsboys have been family and thus shared the same loyal and adoring fans," says Michel Tait. “When I received the initial call from newsboys to consider joining the band as lead singer, I was speechless! I immediately sought wise counsel and flooded the heavens with endless prayers for insight and vision, and I soon received a clear and definite peace. Last weekend, I had the opportunity to perform my first show as newsboys’ frontman to an audience of 12,000 people. I was completely wrapped in love and support by newsboys’ fans, who are clearly the best fans on the planet. Now I know this is exactly where I belong in this new and wonderful moment in my life’s history. This is a definite highlight of my career and for my 20+ years of walking with Jesus, and I am humbled, proud and privileged to call myself a newsboy.”

In the coming days Peter will be releasing a personal statement on the band’s website in more detail.

The band has recently finished recording its new studio album, In The Hands Of God, which features Peter as lead vocalist on the entire album. Street date for this record is May 5th.

Fundraiser

Our friend Jennifer sent this email to let us know about a wonderful event:

Hi Lara,

I need to introduce you to a young family and the mother in this family named Amanda Hasselkus. Amanda and her husband Ryan have been local residents of South Orange County their whole lives and have chosen Mission Viejo as their home to raise their two children Makayla 5 years old and Sterling 18 months. Ryan is a small business owner of a retail nutrition store on 17th street in Costa Mesa and Amanda stays home with her children and is involved in many local organizations and activities.

Among these is the Mission Viejo chapter of MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) that meets every other Friday at Mt. of Olives Lutheran Church and the Mission Viejo South chapter of the MOMS Club. MOPS is a non-profit outreach group which supports mothers of young children. Our chapter is in its seventh year and currently has about 50 families involved in the program. MOMS Club (MOMS Offering Moms Support) is an international non-profit organization. The club was founded in 1982 by a stay-at-home mom, named Mary B. James. Today, there are more than 1,950 chapters and over 92,000 members worldwide.

Several weeks ago Amanda was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of breast cancer. She just had a double mastectomy and will be undergoing aggressive chemotherapy and reconstructive surgery in the coming weeks and months. She is 29 years old.

I don’t have to tell you the personal, emotional, and financial strain that something like this puts on any individual or family. It’s certainly the last thing a young family and young mother like Amanda would ever even consider.

My outreach to you is a simple one. Myself along with many family and friends of Amanda are doing everything we can to help support her through this tough time. One of the biggest things that we can do is help them to cope with the immense medical costs incurred in fighting the cancer so that she can continue to raise her children and be with us for a long time as a great mother, wife, friend, and member of the community.

With this in mind on March 7th at Bridges in Irvine we will hold a Fundraiser/Silent Auction to raise funds to provide help for Amanda, Ryan and their kids in conjunction with our local MOPS chapter and the Mission Viejo MOMS club chapter and Fun Moms from Orange County.

We have GREAT vendors like 'His Kids' Christian clothing and great family silent auction items like Laker tickets, a Newport boat cruise, birthday parties for kids, memberships to gym and dance studios, gift certificates to restaurants. SO MANY people have pulled together for this AMAZING family! We really need help getting people to this event!

Here's Jennifer's email address if you would like more info: jennmcadam@yahoo.com

Big Bear!

You've heard about the Alpenhorn on KKLA, and I recently got to check out this amazing bed-and-breakfast at Big Bear for myself. After rolling in after a long drive and being welcomed by Linda (the wonderful owner) and a huge array of dried fruits, nuts, sweets, and warm beverages, I immediately decided that I never wanted to leave! Everything is open and spacious yet cozy (think high ceilings and lots of warm wood and fireplaces), and there are massage chairs in the living room. There's also a HUGE movie library, amazing food (they make their own granola, which is the best I have ever tasted), and gorgeous rooms (we stayed in the Primrose, complete with giant fireplace and double jacuzzi tub). Check out these pics, and then check out their site: http://www.alpenhorn.com
Plus, the Alpenhorn is just minutes away from the slopes of Snow Summit and Bear Mountain. My hubby and I met up with some friends for a day at Summit, and had the BEST time doing just about every run on the mountain. Lift lines are short, there's a great variety of runs (which is nice for different ability levels in your group), and the weather was bee-yoo-tee--full!!! Think 65 degrees and sunny (we were boarding in sweatshirts), with really nice snow.

It looks like Big Bear is going to get MORE snow this week! Here's are some sites for more info: http://www.bigbear.com/ and http://www.snowsummit.com/index_winter.php
